    Hello Annette! I'm picking fingers for 27 years now. at this point: I can't fold my laundry without getting blood on them, I hide my fingers in a fist so most people ask why I'm angry, my books got oily so I don't use hand creams while working hence I pick even more. A woman at work asked me: you are such a well-kept young lady, why do you demolish you're fingers? I got so mad at her but somehow agreed... I need to stop because I know I'm harming myself. Your video motivated me and I'm gonna start using your advices. I'm not sure if I can endure the healing process but thanks for sharing your experience it gave me hope for a more peaceful daily life. Love from Germany.❤

    Oh snap, sounds like I have it. Should I ask my psychiatrist about it? I don't have psychotherapy, just go to a psychiatrist bcs of my ADHD and things related to my ADHD really. I find the thought of psychotherapy, at least right now, exhausting and dreadful and overwhelming. But I feel like my conversations with my psychiatrist, even though it's just once every one to two months, is like a mini psychotherapy session, though I've never had one but I imagine it similar. I've been picking at my acne ever since I have acne, I've got scars and all, I hate it, I hate how my skin looks and feels, I've had so much negative emotions because of it and it feels a lot like an addiction. Infact, when I first started my ADHD meds (methylphenidate) I was very strict with how I went about it and observed things a lot. Two things broke the flow that the meds gave me - doomscrolling and skin picking. Skin picking seemed to suck out the dopamine in the same way - it felt the same way, like the sensation if I can put it that way of what my mental state was like was the same - and the disrupted and now hard to get back to flow of productivity was disrupted just the same.

    I always chewed my nails, I got the habit from my mother. At the age of 9 she told me I wouldn't be able to become a hairdresser (my then dream vocation) with nails like mine. I stopped, just like that - one day a nail biter, the next day not. Some years later, and I can't even pin point exactly when, I'm approaching 40 now and it could be a decade or more I've been at it, I've become a skin puller. I hate it, it hurts, looks gross, is a gross habit. I'm a pretty handsy person, so my hands can get pretty dry. But even when they're not, I'm looking for a rough patch to work on. Snipping these off to create a straight edge does help, when I'm not too anxious, but if I'm having a rough time I can't stop myself. It feels like an addiction. I can go weeks and be almost healed and really pleased with the result, only to start looking for a rough patch again. Some of my fingers now have these weird bumps around the nail bed, where the skin isn't growing back smooth anymore. I can't stand wearing the gloves to bed, but I do keep hand creams everywhere around my house so that if I'm tempted when I'm not busy around the house, I can massage creams into my finger tips instead to try and keep my hands busy. I keep pebbles around too, something small, flat and smooth, from the beach, to use as a kind of fidget toy when I'm out and about. Keep my hands busy. I've only just realised that what I'm doing can be considered a form of self harm, I'm genuinely shocked to know this. I remember some scenes from the Black Swan movie, thinking goodness that's awful, only to be doing it myself (though obviously not quite as graphic as the movie!)

      Hi. Thanks for sharing your experience. These behaviors are like an addiction and are different from self harm because you are not intentionally trying to hurt or cause pain. Your behavior is satisfying in the moment giving you an escape from anxiety or other difficult emotions or sensations.

      @annettepasternakSSPC 2 місяці тому

      Hi, thanks for sharing. Answer that thought with the opposite, by reminding yourself it will heal on its own. It's just a little bump, it's normal. Go put a pimple patch on it. Self-talk like that.

    Thanks for all the tips. I have been picking skin around my cuticle area and top of the fingers for decades. I have also watched other videos that say this picking has the same effect as people who cut themselves as it is a compulsive thing and relieves pent up anxiety and stress. I wish there was an easy way to deal with OCD behaviors, but I keep trying. lol I will try the gamer fingertip gloves as they sound breathable. I had previously tried latex version, but they made my skin sweat and wrinkle making it more tempting to pick later. Thanks again. ✨

      You're welcome, Anne. It's important to remember the picking is not relieving your anxiety and stress. It's only giving you a temporary satisfaction that provides an escape from those uncomfortable feelings. Overall it increases anxiety.

    Hi Annette! I want you to share my story,I bought your book several years ago about skin picking, probabily after this video I will read it again. Nowadays I do cognitive-behavioural therapy and I'm diagnosed with a CPTSD... I think my mother was like more in the spectrum of affectionless control, she was very sick (she is schizofrenic) and she one day she forced me to sit in my chair to repet to perfection for an oral exam I had in middle school and due to this I began doing skin picking😅 even though my mother was very neglectful I remember she was always telling me to stop doing it like as your mom did...

    After recovering from trauma-induced dermatillomania, I still notice that food sensitivities can put me in a state where I’m more likely to pick. It’s been years since I recovered, and I almost never pick now. But if I eat something I’m sensitive to, I get anxiety and brain fog, and when my nervous system is disturbed like that, it doesn’t take much.

    I’m guessing this is just for anxious, fidgeting and minor skin picking. Because I have Dermatillomania with my severe OCD, and the only thing that I can do is at least keep my hands as busy as I can with something else that isn’t causing me severe harm like picking(like I mean open wounds!) Very good video with some very good information but maybe somewhere in the beginning it should be mentioned that it’s for minor issues like that :) Unfortunately, for me there’s no way I will become less fidgety with all of my other mental illnesses on top of it(although that doesn’t stop me trying !) and there’s no medicine I can take to help me with mine just a certain type of therapy, and some of the things you mentioned, I like to use finger condoms(yk what I mean that’s just what I call them haha) Edit: I went to your account and read the description so I said that this is for people like me, which is great, of course because you offer some very good tips, and I will definitely continue watching your channel! But along the lines of what I said before, it can be harmful to talk about not using fidgets like that( of course you didn’t directly say that as you mentioned) but if you can stop yourself from hurting yourself in the time being while you undergo therapy, that would be the ideal way:) Sorry for all that typing lol I I struggle with severe OCD and Dermatol a mania, and my whole scalp is quite literally covered in scabs, along with a lot of other parts of my body, I’ve always had cystic acne, so my face has always been horrifically scabbed with really bad, infected wounds. I’m just trying to find a good fidget toy that , like you said, he’s going to work better than one that I’m just gonna set down and forget!

    • @annettepasternakSSPC
      @annettepasternakSSPC 2 місяці тому

      In my experience even for people that have it more severe, fidgets seem not to help as much as blocking your ability to touch the skin.

    • @deltazangoose3711
      @deltazangoose3711 Місяць тому

      I'm just the same. I have dermatillomania also similar to what you described. I have scabs all over my head, my legs, and my fingers are usually bleeding most of the time, however since using pick pads, my fingers have had the chance to heal more than they ever have in over 20 years! And before anyone says I haven't tried to break the habit; I have. I really have. but unfortunatelty its like any other condition, someone with a broken leg can't walk if 'they just try hard enough', the same goes for me. I've tried to block my skin before, eg. wearing cotton gloves, etc, however this tends to just make me very stressed and annoyed and results in me ripping them off and then picking like crazy and doing awful terrible damage. I 100% agree, that this video has a lot of really cool and interesting info, but I do agree and think it needs to be stated that it doesn't apply as much to those with more severe conditions - because it genuinely doesn't. If fidgets help your body and mind heal, that's what matters

    • @EB-3002
      @EB-3002 Місяць тому

      @@annettepasternakSSPC honestly yea I have tried every single fidget n I have tried tapping them to my hands. The only thing that has actually helped is covering my wounds in some thing that I cannot scratch through or getting fake nails. But even with my unsuccessful experience in using fidget toys, I still would never not recommend them as some thing to try or just have in the meantime because it can help with many other mental health issues:) And honestly, I have quite a lot of friends with OCD and skin picking issues, and they are the very sam! I wonder if that's a statistic or just your personal experience because realistically yes blocking off the spot you're going to pick is going to help way more than trying to keep your hands busy when you won't always remember to do that because it's often a subconscious thing. I had fake nails on for three weeks and my extreme nail scrubbing OCD really really died down just from not being able to see or reach (therefore not really thinking of) the dirt or whatever under my nails!

    I have ADHD, when I pick at my proximal nail fold it is looking to find a rougher bit to rub against my lips. It is a form of self soothing as well as stimming, I find myself doing this without being fully aware of it. This has been something I've done since I was about age 6 - currently 40 so it's been in the picture for multiple decades.....

      I haven't gotten diagnosed, but I do exhibit an increasing amount of ADHD symptoms. I would like to get diagnosed before adulthood. Anywho, reading your comment made me realize a reason why I might pick my skin... When I pick my skin down to that roughness, I just rub and rub my fingers against each other and my thumb against my hand. I'm not set on this being the reason, but it's a small possibility. Thank you for opening my eyes to this.

As a ventriloquist i really need to stop and want to stop, but like for example while I'm watching tv I'll just like jump and go oh I'm picking my lips right now, i need to stop and continue doing it.

      Dunno, I was breastfed for two years, bit my nails from start of primary school, randomly started hair pulling at 19 and never able to stop.

    Throw away the cotton gloves. Use nitrile gloves, it accelerates the healing and draws moisture from your body into the skin in addition to the moisturiser's effect. You can also wear them during the day without inhibiting dexterity. Great skin and nails in a few days. You must still continue regular daily moisturising when not using the gloves.

    What I have noticed is I would pick at my lips to fidget since I have ADHD and no fidget toy would do as best but my lips and I would pick them non stop all day every day even in public and I have been doing this for years and I wanted to stop cause my lips were cracked and hurt and I wanted to wear lip gloss and lipstick but it doesnt look as good with chapped and cracked lips and I think they might be scarred because I would pick them till they were bleeding I have it really bad. but do you think a lip scrub would work as well as the lip brush?

    Im 16 right now and i have a bad habit of using a pocket knife and digging under my nails with it. I also pick at them in school when im bored. I really hope i can stop soon because ive been picking since i was 4. I got my sister to hide the pocket knife and that has helped a lot
